The Nissan Frontier is a pickup truck that is produced by the Nissan Motor Company and is also sold under the Nissan brand name. Nissan manufactures all of the Frontier units in Smyrna, Tennessee. The first Frontier was unveiled to the public in 1997 for the 1998 model year and it was a replacement for the Nissan pickup.
The first year Nissan offered a choice of either four or six cylinder engines as well as regular or extended cab body styles. The Frontier was also made available with several bed lengths so that this really was a truck that was attractive to everyone. The only complaint about the Frontier is that there was nothing special about it, it was just sort of generic and didn't stand out from the competition. Nissan wanted to stand out, so in 1999 Nissan released the 2000 model of the Frontier with the Frontier Crew Cab. This was the first compact pickup truck that offered consumers a four door body type. Nissan worked again for change for the 2001 model with a facelift that generally gave the Frontier more style, which would make it more attractive to consumers of all ages.
Starting in 2005 the Frontier became more of a midsized truck, using the Nissan F-Alpha platoform and closely resembles the Nissan Titan. The new Frontier has a wheelbase that measures over 125 inches long. The Frontier is now powered by a 4.0 liter VQ family V6 engine that provides 265 horsepower. A five speed manual transmission or six speed manual transmission is standard with optional four or five speed automatic transmissions avialable. The Frontier can also be equipped with either rear or four wheel drive as an option in addition to traction control and hill descent control.
