R33 CD Stacker/tape trouble

I have just bought a skyline r33, imported from Japan. Im having difficulty trying to work the stock cd stacker-tape deck as the manual is in japanese. When I turn on the player it says 'cd err' or 'tape err'. Could anyone tell me how I would correct this problem?

replace the stereo. If it is the original one and it plays cassettes it'l be heaps old and probably stuffed. It's an easy install in the skyline and cd players are cheap as chips these days.
