Coils only need replacing when they fail.

Don't fix it less it broken. Not cheap, If one fails hopefully you will get a specific cylinder misfire. If ignition signal primary is the code you may have to replace all six!

on some cars with timing belts its a sure thing you the timing belts need to be replaced at a given time. so i guess with these coils its not that way you just replace them as they go bad, how likley is it that the coils will go bad? is this something that is common with the v6`s ?

They will fail by the mile. Its sales created by design: electronics installed into hottest engine spot w/o any cooling, creates $weet aftersales revenue... One degree C temp increase halves component age.
V6 is not the issue.

I would not say designed to fail. I only replace coils on maybe 5 out of approx 3,120 cars a year. O2 sensors on the other hand, too many to count.

Everything thing on the car in designed to fail ... every part has a built in approx. mileage.... sorry.

Good point; but we should also here get US sales chart$ to compare

My bad guess is, If it becomes possible, future coilpacks will be installed in$ide exhaustpipe also :( ... hopefully new electric carzars will survive to destroy this business line alltogether.

O2 environment is not comparable. (btw. its ridiculous 1V signal level shows that technology is in its infancy)

i guess what i need to know is, are these good cars are they a car that can be driven with a low amount of problems? or should i consider another car? do they get fair gas milage?

A Maxima is a great car with not many problems.

Theres no real problem with maxima or with its coilpacks compared to others ... and its V6 is very good. I'd want to have A/T oil change history (when buying any used vehicle) as std dino oil is warranted for 30k miles/2yrs. Rear wheel wells should be examined for rust (10yr or older).

Typical maxima A/T has anti slip differential vlsd (great on snow!) and direct gear lockup (locks 3/4 on steady gas over 50mph, this saves gas. Note: needs 20min warmupdrive before it activates). ...still 4cyl engines like stanza gets somewhat better mileage...

how do these cars drive and handle? some reviews tell about road noise and somewhat rough ride. the 2004 maximas claim 30 mile to the gal.  will the 03 get that much milage?

General comment as I have experience only 3gen & 5th gen maximas. Independent suspension makes it all: 3gen (89-94) & 6th (-04)gen have it. Other models have stiff rear axle ... this translates to poor wagoneer handling in any vehicle on rough surface, still ok on straight hiway.

Note that any vehicle shocks wear out every 60k miles and have to be replaced - not to spin on wet icy surface, keep braking distance decent.
